Despite the bad press, Zimbabwe is still able to offer you the most un-forgettable holiday and it is much cheaper than Zambia.
The climate is warm without being oppressive, with a daily sunshine average of seven hours all year round.
Equally warm are the Zimbabwean people, renowned for their friendliness and hospitality.
Zimbabwe is bordered by Zambia in the northwest, Mozambique from north to southeast, South Africa in the south and Botswana in the west. It is a small landlocked country with exceptional natural beauty.
English is the official language with other widely spoken languages being Chishona & Sindebele. Other languages include Sotho, Venda, Tonga & Kalanga.
The capital, Harare (formerly Salisbury) is often called 'Sunshine City' and is characterised by flowering trees, colourful parks and contemporary architecture (although seldom visited by tourists to Zimbabwe).
Attractions to Zimbabwe include the famous
Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park (only 90-minute road transfer or self-drive from Victoria Falls), Lake Kariba, Mana Pools, Great Zimbabwe Ruins etc.
Hwange National Park, formerly Wankie National Park is one of Zimbabwe's largest parks both in size and in the variety of animals that can be seen here. Hwange has a large elephant population of approxmately 40 000.
Lake Kariba is situated in the north west of Zimbabwe and was constructed between 1955 and 1959. It was for many years the largest man-made lake in the world. It is approximately 7770 km2 and holds about a million gallons of water! It has become famous for boating, fishing and game viewing. This is the home of house-boating. Herds of up to 1000 buffalo and many other wild animals come to the shoreline in the dry weather and the birdlife is fantastic.
Mana Pools National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Zimbabwe and occupies approxmately 2196km2 of forest along the banks of the Zambezi River. Walking safari's are spectacular here.
The Great Zimbabwe Ruins (National Monument) is the largest complex of ruins in Africa south of the pyramids in Egypt. With walls of over 9m in height and 4metres thick, it is an incredible sight and worth the visit (see photo above).
The ongoing political unrest in Zimbabwe has deterred a lot of travelers from visiting but the main tourist areas and national parks have been largely unaffected by the situation. It is always advisable to exercise caution when traveling in general and the same rule applies here.
