The Garden Route is the home of the Outeniqua Choo-tjoe, which is South Africa's only remaining scheduled steam train and offers its passengers a unique and scenic 52-kilometre journey to George or from George to Mossel Bay.
PLEASE NOTE THIS TRAIN IS CURRENTLY NOT IN SERVICE HOWEVER WE HOPE TO SEE IT'S RETURN SOON AND WILL ADVISE YOU ACCORDINGLY
The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe covers an incredibly scenic route and is enjoyable for all ages.
The view of the Indian Ocean with its foaming waves crashing onto the seemingly endless beach is breath-taking.
The George departure point is the Outeniqua Transport Museum (Entrance fee not included) which houses various models of steam locomotives, a brilliant collection of steam locomotive number plates, markers plates, a model train room, road motor vehicles and a private vintage car selection.
The Mossel Bay departure point is the Diaz Museum Complex and passengers have the opportunity to visit/see the Post Office tree, Aquarium, Granary, Maritime, Cultural and Shell Museums (Entrance fee not included). Restaurants, souvenirs shops and other facilities are within walking distance.
The train used to run from George to Knysna but due to flood damage the route has been changed to George to Mossel Bay.
Diesel Locomotives:
The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe may be forced to operate with diesel locomotives from time to time. This is because the line runs through an ecologically sensitive area in which there is a considerable risk of veld fires.
