Responsible Tourism
As an integral part of the community from the outset, Kaya Mawa has been involved in support and development within the community. They have been involved in numerous different projects, from piping water to the villages to feeding programmes. For further details of their projects: www.malawidream.com. Katundu Textiles, founded & managed by Suzie Lightfoot, has been the backbone of the creation and design of all the soft furnishings for the recent refurbishment at Kaya Mawa. This involved staff training on site to do welding, weaving and produce superb textiles. www.katundu.net The Area
To visit Likoma Island is to step back in time. Likoma Island remains almost untouched since its discovery by Scottish Missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century. The island measures just 17 sq km with dirt roads and a few vehicles, the local people survive largely by fishing and rice and cassava farming. The island has hundreds of huge baobab trees and a number of glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves.
Guests are advised to consult their doctor on suitable malaria prophylactics, as Malawi is a malaria region. Kaya Mawa tests regularly for bilharzia and results have proven clear every time.
Visas are not required for Malawi if travelling on United Kingdom, USA and most European passports. Please enquire with the nearest Consulate of Malawi or for further details view: www.malawihighcommission.co.uk/.
