Cape Town’s beaches are probably the most well known with their white sand and freezing water on the one side (Atlantic) and the warmer beaches on the other Indian Ocean side. There are many quaint (and also, large) seaside towns that are fantastic to explore. Cape Town's beaches include Camps Bay, Clifton, Hout Bay, Boulders Beach (where you share the beach with the penguins) to name a few.
Cape Town's beaches are best from late-November to the end of March as are the Garden Route beaches. These include Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness Beach, Knysna, Natures Valley, Jeffery's Bay, Cape St. Francis and all the way down to Port Elizabeth.
KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches are warm throughout the year where from here you need only drive an hour or two and you could be in the heart of a game reserve.
Durban is the main city in Kwa-Zulu Natal and it is renowned for its Golden Mile - a 6km stretch of popular beaches. Dairy, Wedge, North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Snake Park Beach are great surfing beaches and offer a range of water-sport activities. Addington & South Beach are family beaches with lots of entertainment on offer.
North of Durban are the ever-popular beaches of Umhlanga, Umhloti, Ballito, Zinkwazi and Umhlali to name a few.
South of Durban has many family beaches and is of course famous for Aliwal Shoal (diving). Some of the swimming beaches are Bazley Beach, Margate, Banana Beach and Southport (Anerley) Beach. The south coast is full of beautiful small coastal towns and little discovered beaches.
A number of beaches in South Africa have been awarded the Blue Flag status, an international award for high standard of safety and water quality.
Between May and October, Mozambique beach holidays provide a great alternative to South Africa's winter, with its remote islands with palm-fringed beaches.
Zanzibar is great for beach holidays between July and February when the weather is generally excellent. Gorgeous long stretches of fine white sand and palm trees await you.
Mauritius is very popular with South Africans as it provides a great all year round climate and beautiful white sandy beaches.
